I haven't taken the exam yet, so I don't know how well this book is going to help me out (not that I'm too terribly worried), but OMG did they ever use a bargain-basement proofreading company. For example, they state on page 141 that 2 * 3 = 4... this sort of typo should jump out at you, shouldn't it?

They also state on the same page that the result of a=2;b=a++ is a = 2; b = 3, which is backwards. I've done enough C++ to know that looked wrong, but I double-checked by writing a simple java program and ran it (just to make sure Java wasn't doing something weird with post-fix operators I was unaware of), and determined for certain that this was dead wrong - and unfortunately, this sort of mistake (there are quite a few in this book) could contribute to a misunderstanding of the language by a beginner. I'd say look elsewhere; God knows there are enough Java books on the market.

This was one of the three books I have read for the Sun Java Certified Programmer's exam. The other two were Simon Roberts, Philip Heller & Michael ernest's Complete Java 2 Certification Guide and Java 2 Exam Cram by Bill Brogden. I hate to say this, but this book is a disaster. In my opinion, I feel this book did not even have an editor. The diagrams are unclear and some of them are flat out wrong. The erratra is not quite comprehensive and there are many more errors. It really feels like a rough draft thrown upon the hapless, but expectant reader to proof read this immense peice of junk.

Not only is it wrong to have a book this poorly edited/proofread put out for people to buy for a certification exam they pay 150 bucks, but it is also morally wrong for them to even publish a book like this which would be disastrous if this is the only book u read for taking the JAVA 2 certification exam. I was mostly disbelieving on the feedback I heard on the book initially when people started bad mouthing this book in almost all the websites/discussion groups I have been to, but let me warn you, this book will damage your understanding of Java. It has a tendency to ramble and confuse more than its purpose to impart concise, efficient information. Of course, there are a lot of good parts too, but not something which you will not find elsewhere. If I were you, I would really avoid this book. You would be better off with the other certification books (RHE, Exam Cram, Khalid Mughal et al.,) . Trust me on this one. Good luck in your exam!!

This books is the best book to take your scjp exam or to understand java. It really gets under the hood of java but in a fun, simple way. I understand what the authors talk about in this book. All other books they were to technical. I've been a java programmer for a year and a half and I love this book it made me understand a lot of things.

The good thing about it is that after every chapter you have your question, exercises and most important the answers to the exercise with their explanation. So you dont have to look for them in any other place(cd).
